inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the poor and low-income communities are the most impacted groups every time a disaster strikes in Indonesia.

"If we look at any disaster that occurs in Indonesia, the most affected are indeed the poor," said BNPB Head Suharyanto, Wednesday (10/22/2025).

According to him, BNPB has studied the potential for the emergence of new poverty groups due to disasters. Based on the study's findings, each disaster risks worsening the socio-economic conditions of already vulnerable communities.

While he did not provide specific figures on the number of new poverty cases caused by disasters, data from the BNPB Operations Control Center indicates that Indonesia is hit by 10 disasters a day, the majority of which are hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides.

The BNPB data explains that by mid-2023, more than 20,736 people were affected by landslides, with estimated physical damage reaching IDR 180.831 billion, economic losses of around IDR 515.194 billion, and environmental damage covering an area of 7,600 hectares.

Similarly, floods affected more than 109,618 people, causing physical damage of around IDR 526.654 billion, economic losses of around IDR 480.264 billion, and environmental damage covering an area of 4,200 hectares.

"So, the number of people in poverty is rising and that's our concern," said the Head of BNPB.

According to him, this situation is one of the grounds for BNPB to strengthen collaboration with BP Taskin in post-disaster management, particularly in the socio-economic recovery aspect of affected residents.

This collaboration on socio-economic recovery is also said to be in line with President Prabowo Subianto's directive that all government agencies use a single, integrated database, the National Integrated Socio-Economic Welfare Data (DTSEN), as a reference for formulating policies and programs.
