inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The United Nations (UN) mission to Libya said it found several sites in the city of Tarhouna, Tripoli, which were suspected of being mass graves, Monday (4/7). The number of sites suspected of being mass graves is estimated around 100. "According to insider knowledge, there may still be 100 mass graves that are yet unknown," the UN report said in a statement this week, quoted by Reuters. In searching for mass grave sites, the UN mission used satellite imagery that showed oddities in the soil structure. The satellite imagery also shows three possible locations for the mass graves. The mass grave of known existence to date is known as "The Landfill." In its report, the United Nations revealed cases of militants who often executed and imprisoned hundreds of people from 2016-2020. The militants were mobilized by seven brothers and known as Kaniyat. Sometimes, the militants imprison people in boxes that look like small ovens. The box was later burned during interrogation. This Kaniyat militant is accused of being the mastermind behind the killings and mass graves. The United Nations said people with disabilities, women, and children were also the victims. The UN mission also found evidence of kidnappings, killings, and torture in the city. Based on statements from local residents and two sites visited, the UN mission found reasonable grounds to suspect that Kaniyat militants were committing crimes against humanity. The UN also found four commanders directly involved in the crime. In response to these findings, the United Nations urged the Libyan government to continue to search for the mass graves. They also urged the government to establish a special tribunal to handle international crimes cases. According to one of the three heads of the UN mission, Tracy Robinson, her team did not have the resources and authority to investigate mass graves in Tarhouna itself. "This is a government obligation," Robinson told journalists.
