inp.polri.go.id - The Head of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Michelle Bachelet, condemned Russia's "senseless war" in Ukraine on Tuesday (5/7). She called for an immediate end to hostilities and the payment of compensation for war victims.
"As we enter the fifth month of hostilities, the toll of the intolerable conflict in Ukraine continues to rise," Bachelet told the UN Human Rights Council, quoted by AFP.
Bachelet said civilians bear the brunt of the effects of the war.
"With daily killings, widespread destruction, arbitrary detention and mass displacement, civilians bear the brunt of a seemingly endless hostility," he said.
For this reason, she urged the war to be stopped immediately.
"In the name of every victim of this senseless war, the killing, torture, arbitrary detention, this war must stop," he said.
He then reported on the human rights situation in Ukraine in the context of the Russian offensive, from the 24 February invasion to 15 May.
"The high number of civilian casualties and the level of damage caused to civilian infrastructure continue to raise significant concerns that attacks carried out by the Russian armed forces are inconsistent with international humanitarian law," Bachelet said.
Although on a much lower scale, he continued, the Ukrainian armed forces also do not fully comply with IHL in the eastern part of the country.
Furthermore, Bachelet said, as of July 3, more than 10,000 civilian deaths or injuries had been documented across Ukraine, with 335 children among the 4,889 people killed.
