Inp.polri.go.id - Manokwari. The Chief of West Papua Regional Police Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir announced the establishment of a team to tackle illegal gold mines in the region, effective post-February 14, 2024.
Emphasizing the pressing need to curb widespread illegal mining in West Papua due to its environmental consequences, he highlighted the use of heavy machinery and hazardous chemicals, like mercury, in these activities.
"If mining adheres to traditional methods, it's deemed acceptable. However, stringent action will be taken against those utilizing heavy machinery as it poses harm to nature," he said on Wednesday (10/1/2024).
Addressing the absence of a community recovery plan for post-mining environmental damages, he underscored the imperative for decisive measures to halt all mining activities.
He called on West Papua's local authorities, traditional leaders, community figures, religious leaders, and youth representatives to educate the public, especially indigenous landowners.
"While individuals may gain monetary benefits, the environment is deteriorating. I implore the community to consider the long-term consequences," he concluded.
