Inp.polri.go.id - Abu Dhabi. Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotejdo said that the 20th World Pencak Silat Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, marked a significant step toward the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games.
The event, held from 18 to 22 December 2024, underscores Indonesia’s efforts to promote pencak silat on a global stage.
“This championship is part of our mission to secure IOC recognition for pencak silat, with the ultimate goal of it being included in the Olympics,” Minister Dito said at the opening ceremony, as reported by antaranews.com.
The initiative follows a meeting between International Olympics Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and President Prabowo Subianto, who also chairs the Pencak Silat Federation of Indonesia (PB IPSI). IOC recognition by 2028 is expected to pave the way for Olympic participation.
The championship also strengthens ties between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, marking their first collaboration under President Prabowo’s leadership.
The event features 1,100 athletes from 55 countries. Indonesia sent 78 competitors and 115 performers for the opening ceremony, highlighting the sport’s growing global appeal.
