Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Papua Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Mathius D. Fakhiri confirmed that 1,297 out of 15,213 polling stations in Papua have not yet carried out voting due to several reasons.
In his statement, he disclosed that the postponement of voting at several polling stations was due to the implementation of the Noken system, which led to conflicts between factions.
"In Central Papua, the Papuan Highlands, and Main Papua, there are some areas where voting could not be conducted," Chief Fakhiri said on Wednesday (14/2/2024).
He explained that conflicts over the distribution of votes under the Noken system were the main obstacles causing the postponement of voting at more than a thousand polling stations.
"I have repeatedly opposed the idea of ballot tying in the Noken system. It shouldn't have been allowed in this election. In Puncak Jaya, voting couldn't happen due to vote disputes, and the same goes for Paniai," Chief Fakhiri said.
However, he was confident that all political interests related to these votes could be resolved a day after.
Furthermore, Chief Fakhiri explained that a total of 34 polling stations in Papua had not yet conducted voting, all due to the hindrance in the distribution process of election logistics.
"In Main Papua, this is hindered because helicopters need to be chartered, which becomes a challenge due to natural factors. I hope there will be follow-ups Thurday," he added.
