inp.polri.go.id - Twenty-seven Chinese warplanes flew into Taiwan's air defense zone Wednesday as US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made her controversial visit to the self-governing island that Beijing considers its territory.
"27 aircraft... entered the surrounding area of (Republic of China) on August 3, 2022," Taiwan's Ministry of Defense said in a tweet.
Taiwan struck a defiant tone as China prepared for military drills around the island in retaliation for Pelosi's visit, hours after the senior US politician left. Leaders of the Group of Seven urged Beijing to restraint, saying there was "no justification" for "aggressive" military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. US House Speaker Pelosi left Taiwan on Wednesday morning.
China later announced what it said were "necessary and fair" military exercises in the seas off the coast of Taiwan, some of the world's busiest waterways. "In the current struggle surrounding Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the United States is the provocateur, China is the victim," Beijing's Foreign Ministry said.
But Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said the island of 23 million people would not be deterred. "Facing a deliberately escalating military threat, Taiwan will not back down. We will ... continue to maintain the line of defense for democracy," Tsai said at an event with Pelosi in Taipei.
China tries to keep Taiwan isolated on the world stage and opposes countries that have official exchanges with Taipei. Pelosi, second in line to the presidency, is the highest US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years. "Today, our delegation ... came to Taiwan to affirm unequivocally that we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan," she said at the event with Tsai.
Before leaving Taiwan, Pelosi also met with some of the dissidents who had previously been the target of Chinese anger -- including student leader at the Tiananmen Wu'er Kaixi demonstration. "Both the United States and Taiwan governments need to... act more in defense of human rights," Wu'er said.
Following from Taiwan, the Pelosi delegation headed to South Korea, and then Singapore and Malaysia. She will end her trip in Japan. After Pelosi left, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense announced late Wednesday that 27 Chinese warplanes had entered the island's air defense identification zone (ADIZ).
The ministry published maps showing 16 Su-30s and 6 J-11s had crossed the so-called "median line" of the Taiwan Strait - the unofficial boundary in the narrow waterway, which separates the island from the mainland and straddles a vital area of shipping lanes.
