inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that 27,000 young people are currently farmers earning between IDR 15 million and IDR 20 million per month.
According to the Minister, interest in the agricultural sector among millennials and Gen Z is increasing along with the introduction of modern technology into the agricultural system. The government is providing support in the form of agricultural facilities and equipment grants, so young farmers can immediately start producing efficiently.
"Those from Merauke, Kalimantan, and Aceh earn an average of IDR 15 million to IDR 20 million. We provide facilities and agricultural equipment grants for them," said the Minister of Agriculture on Wednesday (10/22/2025).
He is optimistic that this trend will continue to grow, especially as the government is intensifying its program to create three million hectares of new rice fields.
The land will be developed using high technology and developed in clusters, which are said to be on par with the agricultural systems of developed countries such as the United States and China. This model is considered more efficient and able to attract the interest of the younger generation to enter the agricultural sector.
Meanwhile, based on the 2023 Agricultural Census released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the majority of farmers in Indonesia are still older.
Around 70 percent of farmers are over 40 years old, with the largest share coming from Generation X (born 1965–1980) at 42.39 percent, followed by Baby Boomers (born 1946–1964) at 27.61 percent.
Meanwhile, participation among the younger generation remains relatively low. Millennials (born 1981–1996) make up only 25.61 percent of the total farmers, and Generation Z (born 1997–2012) makes up even less, at just 2.14 percent.
