Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. In the dynamic unfolding of events in Aceh, Chief Inspector General Achmad Kartiko of the Aceh Regional Police has urgently appealed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to address the escalating Rohingya refugee crisis that has gripped the region since mid-November.
The surge of Rohingya refugees has encountered resistance from various local communities, sparking concerns about potential oversights by international agencies.
A police investigation has revealed that Rohingya refugees arriving in Aceh possess UNHCR identification cards issued in Bangladesh.
Chief Kartiko emphasized the significance of the Bengali language featured on the UNHCR cards, highlighting the necessity for accountability regarding how these individuals managed to escape Bangladesh.
"It's not just our responsibility; UNHCR must also take responsibility for why these Rohingya people fled Bangladesh," Chief Kartiko asserted during a press conference on Thursday (30/11/2023).
Contrary to initial assumptions of a straightforward refugee status, emerging details paint a more complex picture. The Rohingya refugees arriving in Aceh already have established shelters or refugee camps in Bangladesh. Their journey to Aceh involves financial transactions with boat owners in Bangladesh, enabling them to circumvent official permit procedures. This has led to suspicions of a substantial human smuggling operation, a suspicion bolstered by the admission of a recently apprehended Bangladeshi individual.
"We have detained a Bangladeshi resident, and he has admitted that there are funds to enter and transport these people to our region," Chief Kartiko disclosed.
Amidst these unfolding developments, the Aceh Police are steadfastly focusing on preventing potential social conflicts between the local population and the Rohingya refugees.
