ASEAN-Australia Summit Produce Two Important Cooperation Documents

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi states the Special Summit of ASEAN-Australia has produced two documents, which are Melbourne Declaration and ASEAN-Australia Leaders Vision Statement. “Melbourne Declaration contains the cooperation in politic-security, economy, and social culture for the future,” said Minister Retno on Wednesday (3/6/2024). Furthermore, the ASEAN-Australia Leaders Vision Statement is a joint vision of leaders in facing various challenges of geopolitical changes, geostrategy, and geoeconomics. Moreover, Minister Retno also explained that last year Australia released Australian economic strategic documents for Southeast Asia, which was made by Australia's Special Envoy to Southeast Asia Nicholas Moore. “The point of Nicholas Moore report is a new approach from the Australia to improve their trade and investment with Southeast Asia,” explains Minister Retno. “In the eyes of Australia, Southeast Asia is a region with rich potentials, with fairly high economic growth, close geographic proximity, economic complementarity, and is part of Australia's efforts to diversify the economy," added Foreign Minister Retno. In that report, there are four big things that will be carried out, which are raising awareness, removing blockages, building capacities, and deepening investment. Meanwhile, there are 10 priority sectors that will be their focus, they are agriculture and food, natural resources, clean energy transition, infrastructure, education and skills, tourism, health, digital economy, professional and financial services, and creative industries. “As the implementations from the new approach based on Moore reports, Australia have launched ASEAN-Australia Center which demonstrates as support for ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific,” said Minister Retno. It is worth to note that the Summit was held to commemorate the 50 years of ASEAN and Australian partnership. The Summit raised the theme of “A Partnership for the Future”. The Summit in general is divided into two sessions, with the first session discussing about “Future ASEAN-Australia Cooperation” and “The Three ASEAN Cooperation Pillars”. (ad/ndt/pr/nm)
