Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres praised the motto of “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” who he admits could unite and preserve the diversity in Southeast Asia states, even the world.
“Bhineka Tunggal Ika is unity in diversity, this is not just Indonesian national motto, this is the key to build a better future for us all,” he said when giving his remark in front of media at 43rd ASEAN Summit Media Center, Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta, Thursday (9/7/2023).
He also admits the constructive role of ASEAN under Indonesian leadership in building peace, moreover in cooling down the tension at South China Sea to Korean Peninsula. In Indonesia’s effort of building peace, they prioritize dialogue and respecting the international law.
Guterres also underscores the conflict in Myanmar and expressed his concern. He appreciates and support all the efforts in overcoming conflict in Myanmar by involving all parties in the conflict.
“We support ASEAN take in seeking solutions to overcome the conflict in Myanmar. This is the time for the world to lend our hand to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh,” calls Guterres.
Previously, Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsui, stated that Indonesia continuously seek to resolve the issue in Myanmar by implementing Five Point Consensus (5PC). The consensus includes immediate stop of violence, dialogue between involved parties, mediation by ASEAN special representative, provision of humanitarian assistance, and a visit to Myanmar by a special envoy to meet all relevant parties.
Guterres then stated the importance of ASEAN as multilateral organization that could bridges diversities and build an understanding.
“We need this more than ever in the world that is continuously divided. We need a strong multilateral organization to follow that is based on equality, solidarity, and universality,” explained Guterres.
During the retreat session of 43rd ASEAN Summit in JCC, Indonesia was appreciated by all ASEAN head states for the successful event.
