Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning about the potential for extreme weather during the upcoming Christmas and New Year period.
BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati warned the public about increased rainfall, caused by several weather phenomena.
"La Nina is expected to contribute to a 20-40% increase in rainfall, which will persist from the end of 2024 through at least April 2025," she said in a statement on Sunday (24/11/2024).
Dwikorita noted that the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Cold Surge—air masses moving from Siberia toward Indonesia—will also contribute to heightened rainfall during this period.
BMKG urged vigilance regarding the risk of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, and landslides, particularly during the Nataru season.
The agency also advised maritime operators, ferry services, and fishermen to be cautious of high sea waves triggered by the cold surge, which could pose a threat to safety during sea travel and fishing activities.
