inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) considers disaster forensic mapping to be an important thing to do. The goal is to find out when disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes will occur in an area.

"In general, earthquakes and tsunamis are known to occur in cycles of several hundred years. Even thousands of years from the previous incident," said the Director of Disaster Risk Mapping and Evaluation of BNPB, Udrekh, on Saturday (9/14/2024).

According to him, this disaster forensic mapping is very different when compared to conventional disaster mapping. This is because the purpose of this disaster forensic mapping is to get a more complete picture.

"Earthquake or tsunami forensic mapping can involve many experts, such as geology, hydrology, chemistry, oceanology, geodesy, spatial, sociology, DVI, to soil science," he said.

In his statement, he said that the more experts involved, the more relevant the evidence while the results will be more informative. This is because the results of this disaster forensic mapping can be seen from various relevant evidence at the time the disaster occurred.

"Experts need to examine samples of marine sediment that were carried ashore by the tsunami, then calculated with carbon chemistry technology. That's what allows us to reconstruct an event well," he concluded.
