Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has launched an investigation into the tornado phenomenon that struck the Rancaekek area in Bandung Regency, West Java on Wednesday (21/2/2024).
Erma Yulihastin, a researcher at BRIN's Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research, emphasized the significance of reconstructing and investigating this extreme event, marking it as the first recorded tornado in the region, antaranews.com.
"Tornadoes possess higher wind strength and broader radius. The minimum wind speed of a tornado reaches 70 kilometers per hour," she said.
BRIN's study revealed that the strongest recorded tornado had a wind speed of 56 kilometers per hour.
Erma said that typical tornado occurrences in Indonesia last around 5 to 10 minutes, with a rare case of a 20-minute duration in Cimenyan in 2021.
Shedisclosed that BRIN, through its Mid-Term Seasonal Study for the Indonesian Region, had already predicted extreme weather events for 21 February 2024.
The West Java Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is compiling data on various buildings affected by the disaster, including PT Kwalram, the Dwipapuri Industrial Area, Borma Supermarket Rancaekek, the Mobile Brigade Regional Police Dormitory, and several minimarkets in the Jatinangor District.
