Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The East Java Regional Police have discovered several chemical substances during a forensic investigation into a mysterious explosion at the Masjid Raya Pesona mosque in Jember.
East Java Police Chief Inspector General Nanang Avianto said on Tuesday (17/3/2026) that a joint team, comprising bomb disposal, forensic laboratory, and criminal investigation units, is conducting a meticulous "scientific crime investigation."
"We must be thorough and not rush the investigation to ensure accurate results, as there is a suspicion of chemical substances at the location. Collecting this evidence requires specialized equipment and precision," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com
The joint team discovered liquid-filled jerry cans and traces of chemicals near a steel cabinet, which is suspected to be the epicenter of the explosion. The police have justified the temporary closure and sterilization of the mosque as a necessary safety precaution.
However, as of Wednesday (18/3/2026), the police cordon has been removed, and the mosque has been cleared for public use, including the continuation of Ramadan activities like Iktikaf and communal suhoor. Investigators are currently analyzing CCTV footage and the chemical samples to determine whether the blast was accidental or intentional.
The blast occurred on Monday night around 8 pm, while congregants were the Tarawih night prayer. While no fatalities were reported, one worshipper was hospitalized at dr. Soebandi hospital for hearing impairment caused by the intense pressure of the blast.
