Inp.polri.go.id - Serang. The Serang District Court sentenced on Friday (27/10/2023) eight Iranian nationals to death for their involvement in smuggling 319 kilograms of methamphetamine, locally known as "sabu."
"The defendants, Abdul Rahman Zardkuhi, Ayub Wafa Salak, Abdol Aziz Barri, Usman Damani, Shahab Syahraky, Wali Mohmmad Paro, Wahid Baluch Kari, and Amir Naderi, are hereby sentenced to death," Chief Judge Uli said as quoted by antaranews.com
The panel of judges, led by Chief Judge Uli Purnama, considered that all eight Iranian nationals guilty of violating Article 114 2 in conjunction with Article 132 1 of Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics.
The Iranian nationals attempted to smuggle the massive quantity of methamphetamine through the waters of the Indian Ocean towards Java Island. Their operation was foiled when they were arrested at the Indah Kiat Port in Merak, Banten.
Amir Naderi, one of the convicts, had previously faced a life sentence for revealing the location of the concealed drugs on the vessel.
The ruling found that the defendants engaged in the professional smuggling of methamphetamine into Indonesia, thus being part of an international drug network. Prosecutor Ronny Bona Tua Hutagalung, from the Cilegon District Attorney's Office, said that the ruling was at the maximum level of punishment.
