Inp.polri.go.id - Yogyakarta. The Yogyakarta Regional Police arrested a man posing as a doctor who allegedly scammed several women through a romance fraud scheme, or “love scamming,” causing total losses of Rp 250 million (approx. USD 15,000).
“The suspect used a fake identity as a doctor named Christian Kwon and built emotional relationships with victims for months,” said Yogyakarta Police Special Crimes Director Senior Superintendent Wirdhanto Hadicaksono during a press conference on Thursday (26/6/2025), as reported by antaranews.com
Identified as MSP (29), the suspect was arrested in Bandung, West Java after allegedly targeting women between November 2023 and October 2024 via dating apps and WhatsApp.
Police said the victims, mostly students or young professionals, were manipulated emotionally and financially, including being persuaded to pawn laptops and motorcycles.
Authorities identified four victims and seized fake IDs, ATM cards, and evidence of transactions.
Suspect MSP, an English tutor, now faces up to 12 years in prison under the cybercrime and fraud laws.
