Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, confirmed that five members of the Bali Nine have been transferred to Australia while maintaining their status as convicted prisoners.

"Their status remains as inmates. They were transferred under Indonesia’s terms, without any pardons granted," he said in a press statement on Sunday (16/12/2024), as quoted by antaranews.com.

This transfer is part of a practical arrangement agreed upon by Indonesia and Australia, ensuring the latter respects Indonesia’s sovereignty and court rulings. Australia has also committed to informing Indonesia about the prisoners’ treatment post-transfer.

The transferred prisoners—Matthew James Norman, Scott Anthony Rush, Si Yi Chen, Michael William Czugaj, and Martin Eric Stephens—were recorded in Indonesia’s travel blacklist.

The agreement, based on reciprocity, aims to enhance bilateral cooperation. The prisoners departed Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on Sunday morning and arrived in Darwin, Australia.

The Bali Nine, arrested in 2005 for trafficking 8.2 kilograms of heroin, faced various sentences. Two members were executed in 2015, while others received long prison terms or succumbed to illness.
