Inp.polri.go.id - Lumajang. Mount Semeru, Java's highest volcano, erupted multiple times on Sunday (15/12/2024), sending ash columns as high as 1 kilometer above its summit.

The Semeru Observation Post reported six eruptions from early morning until late afternoon, beginning at 3.44 amand continuing until 4.50 pm. Ash columns ranged in height from 400 to 1,000 meters, with plumes drifting toward the northeast.

The most significant eruptions were recorded during the early morning hours, according to antaranews.com.

Sigit Rian Alfian, a staff member at the Semeru Monitoring Post, noted that seismic instruments recorded maximum amplitudes of 22 mm during the larger eruptions, lasting up to 162 seconds. The volcano remains at Alert Level II (better known as Waspada), indicating moderate volcanic activity with potential risks. Authorities emphasized the need for heightened vigilance in areas prone to volcanic hazards.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has issued safety recommendations, restricting all activity within an 8-kilometer radius of the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan River. Residents are also advised to avoid areas within 3 kilometers of the crater due to risks of pyroclastic flows and falling volcanic material. Additional warnings highlight the potential for lahars during heavy rains in river channels originating from Semeru’s summit, particularly Besuk Kobokan and its tributaries.

Located on the border between Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, Mount Semeru is renowned for its continuous activity.
