Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Indonesian Embassies in Yangon and Bangkok rescued 12 Indonesian citizens who were held captive by an online scam syndicate in the conflict region of Myawaddy, Myanmar.

The victims were transported from Myanmar to Thailand at 4 pm local time on Tuesday (15/10/2024), where they will undergo immigration processing in accordance with local regulations, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Antaranews.com reported that the victims had traveled to Thailand between March and July under the promise of job opportunities. However, they reported being held captive and forced to work as online scammers and in illegal gambling operations, facing physical abuse during their ordeal. They also encountered communication difficulties as their devices were confiscated, although some managed to reach out to the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon.

The ministry received reports from the victims in August 2024 and has since taken various actions, including issuing diplomatic notes, coordinating with Myanmar authorities, and working with local networks in Myawaddy.

To date, the ministry has facilitated 65 Indonesians leaving the region, with 69 others being assisted in their attempts to leave.

The ministry urged all Indonesians planning to work abroad to use official channels and adhere to legal procedures to avoid falling victim to human trafficking and forced labor.
