The Acting Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervision (PSDKP) of Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries Affairs, Pung Nugroho Saksono, states that four fishermen allegedly committing destructive fishing in Kokoila Island waters have been arrested. “The arrest was conducted after Bitung PSDKP, North Sulawesi, received a report from fisherman who hear loud explosion. As we all know, explosive could severely damage the marine ecosystem, especially the coral reefs,” he said quoted from RRI News Office on Monday (3/11/2024). Meanwhile, Head of Bitung PSDKP, Kurniawan, reveals the four suspects with the initials of PR (45), A (18), R (18), and A (14). From the arrest of the four suspects, the authority also confiscated the evidence of two boats, and one outboard engine of Yamaha 15 PK. “Then TS 24 PK outboard engine, one compressor machine, two rolls of compressor hose, two fish scoops, one gas lighter, one battery, one roll of black and red cable, two pairs of fins, two diving masks, one binocular, and fish around 300 kg,” said Kurniawan. According to the suspect statement, they brought two five-liter jerry cans and three bottles of fish bombs. Furthermore, they also admit that they have did the practice several times around Balu Lunas Island. “The suspects have violated Article 84 paragraph (1) Jo Article 8 paragraph (1) Law No. 31 of 2004 concerning Fisheries,” conclude Kurniawan.
