Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Transportation announced the designation of 36 international airports across the country, a move aimed at strengthening global connectivity, supporting economic growth, and enhancing competitiveness.
“Making airports international is a concrete step in carrying out President Prabowo’s directive to improve connectivity, accelerate economic development, and ensure the state’s presence across the archipelago,” Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi said on Tuesday (19/8/2025), as quoted by antaranws.com.
According to the ministry, the policy will deliver multiple benefits: direct international flight access for passengers and goods, new hubs for trade and investment, expanded tourism gateways, and more balanced development beyond Java to regions such as Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua.
Each designation will follow safety, infrastructure, and service readiness standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The ministry also stressed that international status will be evaluated every two years, and airports with low traffic may lose the designation.
