Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The government has officially lifted import quotas on live cattle to strengthen the country’s food supply, particularly in meat and dairy. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan) announced the policy at the 2025 National Milk Day event in Jakarta on Sunday (15/6/2025).

"Now we’ve opened it wide. Imports of live cattle—whether for slaughter, fattening, or milk production—are now unrestricted. It’s all free," he said, as reported by antaranews.com.

The new policy is expected to benefit the livestock industry by increasing production capacity and improving supply chain efficiency. It also provides opportunities for the dairy sector to boost output and meet growing consumer demand.

Despite the policy shift, Minister Zulkiflidid not explain the implementation mechanisms and left the venue shortly after his statement.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono had earlier said Indonesia plans to import 2 million live cattle by 2029 to meet domestic needs, with 250,000 expected in 2025 alone.
