Indonesia is ready to facilitate closer engagement between North Korea and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono said during a bilateral meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in Pyongyang on Saturday (11/10/2025).
“Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to help foster stronger involvement between the DPRK and ASEAN, including through mechanisms such as the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF),” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The visit, the first by an Indonesian foreign minister to Pyongyang in 12 years, highlighted Jakarta’s commitment to constructive regional diplomacy. Both ministers also discussed long-standing ties and explored new areas of cooperation spanning political, socio-cultural, technical, and sports sectors.
The two sides signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations, reaffirming over six decades of friendship between the nations. Sugiono also attended the 80th anniversary celebration of the Workers’ Party of Korea on Friday.
