Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati attended the dispatch of 10 million doses of polio vaccine to Afghanistan at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, on Thursday (7/3/2024).
The polio vaccine, produced by PT Bio Farma, will be delivered by UNICEF in coordination with Afghan authorities through the International Development Cooperation Agency (IDCA). Minister Retno highlighted that the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan remains dire, with data from the World Food Programme indicating that 23.7 million Afghans require humanitarian assistance. The inadequate healthcare system in Afghanistan has left the population vulnerable to infectious diseases, including polio, making it one of several countries categorized as endemic for the disease. "In light of this situation, it is our moral duty to provide assistance. This decision is also in response to Afghanistan's request for polio vaccine donations. Considering our expertise in polio vaccines, I believe Indonesia is well-equipped to contribute," stated Minister Retno. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani emphasized that Indonesia's donation of the polio vaccine demonstrates concrete support for Afghanistan's vaccination program, benefiting 3.3 million children under the age of three.
