Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs concerned that the 2024 General Elections would lean to money politics. He assessed that this is due to the low per capita income of the Indonesian people. Mahfud also emphasized that there are potential that people’s voice could be bought by politicians. “It looks like that our voice in elections is still transactional due to our low per capita income. I agree that democracy would be better if our per capita income has reached 5,500 US dollars, while now we are still at 4,500 US dollars,” says Mahfud quoted from RRI on Monday (10/9/2023). He explains that transactional politic practice not only applies to voice sales, but also between the contestants and political parties. Although democracy is still considered to be the best governmental system in the world, Mahfud assessed that Indonesian democracy is still not yet perfect. According to the Coordinating Minister, the imperfect of Indonesian democracy possess a huge threat to the Indonesians such as, transactional politics, the risk of choosing the wrong leader, and the emergence of liars who like to praise themselves. “Democracy is still considered to be the best because it involves the public continuously or temporarily to determine something,” explains Mahfud.
