Inp.polri.go.id - Makassar. Kusuma Wardhani, the renowned archer who won a silver medal for Indonesia at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, has passed away on Sunday (12/11/2023) at the age of 59 at her home in Panankkukang, Makassar, South Sulawesi, following complications from a blocked artery. The Indonesian Archery Federation (Perpani) expressed its deepest condolences, describing her as a legendary figure and a constant source of inspiration for the archery community, antaranews.com reported. The trio of Kusuma Wardhani, Nurfitriyana Saiman and Lilies Handayani made history as Indonesia's first Olympic archery medallists at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Their silver medals paved the way for Indonesia's success in subsequent Olympic Games. Born on 20 February 1964 in Makassar, her life has been closely intertwined with the archery field. At the age of 24, she made history by winning the silver medal in Seoul. Her legacy extended beyond her sporting achievements, as she married former athlete Adang Adjidji, who went on to become a coach at the National Training Centre. Wardhani's influence on the sport continued through her daughter, Amanda Fajriana, who followed in her parents' footsteps to become an accomplished archer. Wardhani's remarkable skills were evident even before the Olympics, with notable performances at the 1987 SEA Games and Asian Championships. At the 1988 Olympics, Wardhani, Saiman and Handayani scored 952 points to secure Indonesia's place on the podium. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
