Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia's senior national football team have landed  in Iraq on Sunday (12/11/2023) to take on the 68th-ranked nation in the second round of Asian Zone qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The match is scheduled to take place at the International Basra Stadium in Basra, Iraq, on Thursday, antaranews.com reported. The first group of players from Jakarta consists of 14 members who have completed their matches with their respective clubs in the 2023/2024 Liga 1 season. Two more players, Nadeo Argawinata and Adam Alis, will join the squad after the conclusion of the 19th round of Liga 1 matches against Borneo FC on Sunday. Meanwhile, players based in Europe and Asia, including Jordi Amat (Johor FC), Elkan Baggott (Ipswich Town), Sandy Walsh (KV Mechelen) and Shayne Pattynama (Viking FK), will join the team in Iraq directly from their respective countries. Coach Shin Tae-yong gave an insight into the team's journey, saying: "Our journey has been quite long and the players are in good condition. At the moment, not all the players have arrived, so I cannot give you any detailed information about their condition. I brought 14 players from Jakarta and the rest will arrive in the next three days". Due to different league schedules, not all the players were able to travel together. Upon arrival in Iraq, the Indonesian national team held evening training sessions. After their stint in Iraq, Indonesia will fly to the Philippines to take on their familiar opponents in the second round of Asian Zone qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on Tuesday.
