Inp.polri.go.id - Yogyakarta. The Chief of Indonesian National Police (INP) Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated his commitment to combating human trafficking crimes (TPPO) at the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) Leaders event held in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) on Tuesday (20/6/23).

"At the inaugural SOMTC today, where Indonesia happens to hold the chairmanship, we express our gratitude. It took us a considerable amount of time, 10 years, to achieve this chairmanship. Therefore, this event holds great significance for the INP, especially in addressing the more pressing issues we have been tackling," stated the police chief.

He expressed his hope that this event would go beyond mere formal cooperation and enable specific discussions, fostering operational collaboration, particularly in the realm of law enforcement against transnational crime.

"We have encountered a challenge in arresting criminals who flee abroad, facing bureaucratic obstacles that hinder our efforts. This not only frustrates the expectations of the victims but also undermines our aspirations to arrest these criminals," he said.

He further highlighted that the discussion on TPPO aligns with the agreement between President Jokowi and several world leaders to combat all forms of TPPO.

"Human trafficking is undoubtedly a global concern, and within SOMTC, it stands as one of the paramount issues that we earnestly hope will safeguard Indonesian citizens in the future," he said.

He said that cross-border cooperation extends beyond information exchange, aiming to bolster law enforcement by arresting perpetrators outside the country, stating, "With enhanced operational collaboration, we can rescue and repatriate victims from abroad."

The former Chief of Banten Regional Police affirmed that in line with President Jokowi's policy, the INP have arrested 457 TPPO suspects within a span of two weeks.

"We aspire that through our efforts, individuals intending to work abroad will opt for official channels, guaranteeing their legal protection and rights. We aim to prevent any harm befalling Indonesian workers abroad," he said.

During the event, he urged the public not to succumb to allurements of high wages, but rather prioritize skills and meet the necessary requirements.

"I have instructed INP members, regardless of whether they are from external institutions or the police themselves, to take decisive action. With no compromises, I encourage the public to promptly report any related information, as we are committed to the welfare of our people. We are determined to protect our fellow citizens working overseas, as they are the unsung heroes of Indonesia," he concluded.
