Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) Criminal Investigation Agency’s Directorate for Certain Crimes has begun investigating suspected illegal logging in the upper Tamiang River in Aceh after piles of logs were found during recent floods.
The probe aims to determine who conducted the cutting, where it occurred, why the logs were present in protected areas, and how the activity contributed to the disaster.
INPBrigadier General Irhamni, the INP’s Director of Certain Crimes, said early findings indicate unlicensed timber cutting and land clearing.
“Most of the logging in the Tamiang protected forest area had no permit and used the panglong method,” he said on Tuesday (09/120/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
Police deployed additional teams to examine logging routes, trace the timber’s origin, and assess whether the logs were intentionally released during rising water. The investigation is being coordinated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through a joint task force.
