Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Jakarta will retain its status as Indonesia’s capital until President Prabowo Subianto signs a decree officially transferring it to the new capital of Nusantara, Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas confirmed on Monday (18/11/2024).
"Under Article 70 of the DKJ Law, Jakarta remains the capital until the presidential decree on the transfer is signed," he said at the House of Representatives (DPR), referring to the Law on the Special Region of Jakarta.
The transition depends on completing key infrastructure in Nusantara, including facilities for the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The development is expected to take several years, as the government prioritizes readiness for governance in the new capital.
"Once the necessary infrastructure is ready, Nusantara will be deemed fit to serve as the capital," Minister Supratman explained, as reported by antaranews.com.
The government is also working with the House to revise the DKJ Law, which includes renaming the Special Capital of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta) to the Special Region of Jakarta (DKJ). The legal framework aimed to strengthen Jakarta’s new role post-capital transition.
The revisions are targeted for completion before regional elections complete on 27 November 2024, ensuring a smooth transition for both Jakarta and Nusantara.
