Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  During a visit to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Disposal Site in Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday (27/10/2024),  Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stressed the need to end waste imports into Indonesia.

He said that these imports worsen waste management problems and pose health risks.

"We have enough waste already; let's stop rationalizing it. Sending waste to Indonesia is enough, no matter the reasons," he declared, as quoted by antaranews.com.

Minister Hanif vowed to stop waste imports this year, requiring importing countries to manage their waste independently in Indonesia.

"No one can guarantee that imported waste is pre-processed. We will put an end to this," he insisted.

In the next five years, the Ministry will focus on improving domestic waste management, as 38.21% of the 38.2 million tons of waste remains unprocessed.

The Bantargebang site, Indonesia's largest waste facility, currently exceeds its capacity, handling up to 8,000 tons of waste daily from Jakarta. Hanif aims to convert this waste into compost and fuel.
