Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Mount Semeru unleashed a series of nine eruptions early Saturday (4/4/2026), propelling volcanic ash columns up to 1,000 meters above its summit in East Java as seismic activity intensified across the region.
"The highest eruption occurred at 5.19 am, with thick gray ash clouds drifting westward and recording a maximum amplitude of 22 mm," said Semeru Observation Post Officer, Liswanto, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) maintained the volcano's Level III (Alert) status, prohibiting all activities within a five-kilometer radius of the crater due to ballistic rock hazards. Authorities also established a 13-kilometer exclusion zone along the Besuk Kobokan sector, warning residents of potential pyroclastic flows and cold lava mudslides triggered by recent rainfall.
Emergency response teams remain on high alert as seventeen volcanic earthquakes were recorded between midnight and dawn. Local disaster management agencies continue to monitor river basins originating from the peak, urging communities in Lumajang and Malang to remain vigilant against sudden escalations in volcanic discharge.
