Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The northern solstice, occurring annually on 21 June 2025, signals the beginning of Indonesia’s dry season, said Thomas Djamaluddin, senior researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
“At the northern solstice, the Sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky, marking a key turning point in seasonal cycles,” he said over the weekend, as quoted by antaranews.com.
While the phenomenon marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, for equatorial countries like Indonesia, it triggers a shift in wind patterns.
“After the solstice, winds generally start blowing from south to north, pushing cloud formation northward. This marks the onset of the dry season in much of Indonesia,” he explained.
The solstice occurs due to Earth’s axial tilt of 23.5 degrees, causing the Sun’s apparent movement between hemispheres throughout the year.
During the northern solstice, the Sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, resulting in the longest day in the north and, in polar regions, the midnight sun phenomenon.
