Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. Papua Police Chief, Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri held a sharing session with the theme of “Law Enforcement on Corruption Crimes” at the Old Papua Police HQ on Wednesday (11/8/2023). The activity invites 7 Special Task Force of Corruption Handling from the Indonesian National Police, led by the the task force vice head, Novel Baswedan.
Papua Police Chief welcomes the initiatives from the task force and underlined the importance of police in maintaining public safety and security, enforcing the law, and providing protection and service to the community.
The police chief also highlights the serious problem of corruption that has been seeded into community daily lives and bringing huge negative impacts to national economy. He believes it is necessary for law enforcement that is optimized, professional, and modern in eradicating corruption crimes.
Mathius admits a long process of enforcing the law on corruption crimes are usually less effective. The resources it needs to complete the case often bigger than the benefits it gains.
The law enforcement on corruption crime in digital space also met with several issues, such as demography issues, limited human resource, and limited general resources. The limitations are not necessarily hinder the law enforcement on corruption, but it still requires concrete actions so that the corruption law enforcement in Papua would be on the same level as other developed regions.
“Other than digitalization law enforcement, a collaboration and cooperation with BPKP through investigative audits and audit of calculations of state financial losses could be the big clues in enforcing the law against corruption,” says the police chief.
He also believes that sting operations should not be seen as some kind of pride or achievements. According to him, the massive sting operations would only expose Indonesia vulnerabilities against corruption crimes.
He underscored that in fighting against corruption, it requires a joint strength of the government, public, and relevant stakeholders. A strong commitment from the government, a synergy between law enforcement authorities, ministries, institutions, government and non-government organization, public support, and mass media are required to actively join in fighting against corruption crimes.
