Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Papua Provincial Government is in active negotiations with the Keondoafian Kayo Island community, who have been staging a protest by blocking access to the Papua Governor's Office complex since September 17, 2023.
Jeri Agus Yudianto, Head of the Papua Province Communication and Information Service, confirmed that discussions began with indigenous communities on Monday, September 18, 2023, to address the situation.
"As of now, no resolution has been reached regarding the demand for compensation. Therefore, the Papua Provincial Government is committed to further dialogues in order to find a viable solution," he stated.
He reported that while the main entrance to the Papua Governor's Office has been reopened by the Kayo Pulo religious community, some office doors remain obstructed.
"We need a space for dialogue, which will be facilitated by representatives of the Papua Governor's office, with the hope of expediting a resolution to this issue," he said.
Currently, the specific compensation amount requested by the indigenous community for the ongoing blockade remains undisclosed to his office. eHe further noted that the blockade has significantly disrupted public services at the Papua Governor's Office.
"Religion, tradition, and governance must go hand in hand to advance Papua province. Hence, we hope to prevent any further disruptions to public services," he added.
The indigenous Kayo Pulo Keondoafian Community initiated the blockade at the Papua Governor's Office on Sunday (17/9) and Monday (18/9) around 2:59 pm local time. The barricade was lifted following an agreement between the Papua Provincial Government and the indigenous community to address the compensation demands.
