Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of Officer During Patrol in Yalimo, Papua

Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. A police officer, First Brigadier  Iqbal Anwar Arif, has been shot dead while on patrol in the Yalimo Regency in Papua area as part of the Damai Cartenz Operation 2025 at around 4.30 pm local time on Friday. 

During a routine patrol, the team encountered a wooden plank blocking the road. As the first their car stopped to investigate, shots were fired from a cliff, with one hitting officer Iqbal.

Brigadier General Faizal Rahmadani, the Head of the  Damai Cartenz Task Force, confirmed on Saturday (18/1/2025) that all officers in the area have been instructed to remain vigilant. He reiterated the National Police’s commitment to maintaining public safety.

“We will continue our efforts to ensure security in Papua, despite the challenges,” he said, reiterating the Indonesian National Police (INP)’s commitment to maintain public safety.

The body of officer Iwqbal has been flown to Jakarta for burial, and he was posthumously promoted to Brigadier.

An investigation is underway, and the police are calling on the public to assist with any information to help identify those responsible.
