Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. President Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, has called for an immediate ceasefire to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, emphasizing the need to prevent further loss of lives and property damage. "The conflict has escalated and caused a greater humanitarian impact," he said during the press statement, which was made accessible via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Tuesday (10/10/2023) President Jokowi underlined the urgency of addressing the root cause of the conflict - the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel - in accordance with United Nations parameters, antaranews.com reported.
The president has directed Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi and relevant government agencies to take immediate action to save Indonesian citizens in areas affected by the conflict. The Foreign Affairs Ministry has devised a contingency plan to evacuate Indonesian citizens residing in conflict zones, including potential evacuation routes through neighboring countries, such as Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt. The recent escalation of the conflict was triggered by an incursion from the Hamas armed group into the Israel-Gaza border area on October 7, which resulted in the killing of Israeli soldiers and civilians and the abduction of several individuals. In response, Israel launched a series of extensive airstrikes on Gaza, with the possibility of a ground invasion into territory they had previously occupied nearly two decades ago. The conflict has already taken a devastating toll, with 800 Israelis killed and 2,500 injured due to the Hamas attack, while Israel's airstrikes have led to 500 Palestinian fatalities and over three thousand people wounded. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reports that nearly 74,000 refugees have sought shelter in 64 UNRWA facilities, and this figure is expected to rise as the conflict persists, including in civilian areas.
