Inp.polri.go.id - Denpasar. Indonesia has been teaming up with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Climate Promise Project to craft a roadmap for decarbonizing its tourism industry following the its ratification during the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the AIS (Archipelagic and Island States) ForumĀ  in Bali on Tuesday I10/10/2023).
"We encourage stakeholders to develop action plans and road map to promote climate-positive tourism. Our future tourism must be able to present climate-positive tourism," Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno announced at a press conference, antaranews.com reported. The decarbonization roadmap encompasses three key areas: tourist attractions, such as destinations; lodging and tourism facilities; and tour and travel services. The initial focus will be on reducing energy consumption and minimizing the waste generated by tourism activities. Minister Sandiaga highlighted that the long-term goal is to implement decarbonization measures to cut energy usage and diminish the amount of waste produced by the tourism sector. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy intended to follow through on this roadmap by setting emission reduction targets for the tourism industry and creating a reporting system that aligns with the goal of achieving zero emissions by 2060 or earlier. It has partnered with the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources within the Climate Promise Project to conduct waste processing surveys at select hotels. These actions will be extended to five other high-priority tourism destinations in Indonesia, the minister said.
