Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has underlined the critical role of proper law enforcement in addressing half of the nation's challenges. He emphasized that adhering to legal regulations not only ensures legal certainty for the public but also provides protection. "Law enforcement serves dual purposes. Firstly, assurance for those at the top, and secondly, protection for those at the bottom," stated Minister Mahfud MD during his address at the appointment ceremony of Constitutional Law Professor Prof. Siti Marwiyah, his younger sister and the current Rector of Dr. Soetomo University in Surabaya, on Saturday (16/9/23). In his speech, when referring to the "top," Minister Mahfud MD included investors and business figures. He argued that the lack of legal certainty has contributed to Indonesia's reduced standing in law enforcement, particularly in the global fight against corruption. "This is a challenge we are actively addressing," the Minister emphasized, as reported by antaranews.com. The Minister also drew attention to the growing legal challenges in Indonesia despite the abundance of law graduates in the country. Consequently, he stressed the significance of not focusing solely on theory but also on cultivating moral integrity. "In the field of Law, academic knowledge alone does not hold the highest value anymore. Information on becoming a professor or not is readily accessible on the internet today. What truly matters is the cultivation of moral integrity," he explained. He argued that if students in Law faculties concentrate solely on theories, they might surpass their professors in knowledge, as they can access legal information and literature more quickly online than through traditional lectures. "What remains paramount is integrity, morality, honesty, courage, and an unwavering commitment to upholding the law. In Indonesia, despite the surplus of law graduates, legal issues persist as one of the country's most significant challenges," concluded the Minister. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
