inp.polri.go.id – Acting President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe canceled the national emergency status on Wednesday (13/7), despite the increasingly violent demonstrations.
The cancellations included the lifting of the curfew rules previously imposed by the government after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives, as quoted by CNN.
Previously, Wickremesinghe, who served as Prime Minister, was appointed President according to Sri Lanka's law. The appointment came hours after Rajapaksa fled his country to the Maldives on a military plane.
"Because President Rajapaksa left the country, he told me that he appointed the prime minister to work as president according to the constitution," said Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, Wednesday (13/7).
Wickremesinghe himself has immediately used his authority as president by declaring a state of emergency. But less than a day, he lifted the emergency status.
However, the wave of demonstrations still continues. The demonstrators even stormed the Prime Minister's office shortly after Wickremesinghe's appointment as Acting President. An eye witness told AFP that a mob of men and women broke through the military guard around the PM's office on Wednesday (13/7).
According to the eyewitness, the police and the army were unable to contain the crowd, even though they had fired tear gas and water cannon.
The demonstrators then entered the Sri Lankan PM's office to raise the national flag inside. Demonstrators began crowding Wickremesinghe's office after Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives in the early hours of Wednesday.
From the Maldives, Rajapaksa is said to be sending a letter of resignation. Just like Rajapaksa, Wickremesinghe also had plans to resign from the PM chair.
