Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. The Riau Regional Police investigated cases of fraud through the modus operandi of Application Package File (APK) scams spreading through WhatsApp and social media platforms, falsely claiming association with the voting committee (PPS) for the 2024 elections.
Assistant Superintendent Fajri, the Head of Sub-Directorate V Cybercrime at the Riau Police, explained that this fraudulent scheme resembled previous cases of election-related APK scams using invitations.
"We are currently investigating this APK-PPS Election fraud, which is gaining prevalence in the community and on social media," he said on Thursday (1/2/2024).
Chief Fajri revealed that APK are typically not sold on Google Playstore. This scam works by sending links to APK- PPS Election applications through WhatsApp and social media, ultimately leading to the theft of personal data once downloaded and installed on victims' devices.
"We urge everyone not to click on these fraudulent APK links, as it may result in downloading and installing the application on the victim's device," he emphasized.
Social media users were advised to remain vigilant, not to click and download applications from unclear sources before a thorough check.
