Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Sarmi Regency, Papua, on Tuesday evening (12/8/2025), causing reported damage to buildings, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“Based on community reports, this earthquake caused damage in Sarmi, but there are no further updates yet,” BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director Daryono said, as reported by antaranews.con.

The quake occurred inland at a depth of 38 kilometers, about four kilometers southeast of Sarmi. Tremors were felt in several areas, ranging from intensity IV MMI, which was felt by most residents, waking many people, to intensity II MMI, including Sarmi, Jayapura, and Wamena.

BMKG recorded at least four aftershocks, the largest measuring 5.1 magnitude.

Preliminary seismic analysis indicated the shallow quake was triggered by activity along the Mamberamo Thrust Belt and posed no tsunami threat. Authorities urged residents to check building safety before re-entry and remain vigilant, following official instructions and avoiding unverified information.
