Inp.polri.go.id - Padang. As of July 2024, the West Sumatra Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has addressed 21 Sumatran tiger conflicts.
During the "Stories of Tiger Rescuers" discussion for Global Tiger Day 2024 on Monday (29/7/2024), BKSDA Chief Lugi Hartanto said that the agency addressed 21 cases out of approximately 70 reported incidents from January to July 2024.
It follows their past successes, where in 2021, BKSDA rescued 33 Sumatran tigers from 76 incidents, and in 2023, they saved 34 tigers, as reported by antaranews.com..
Despite the cultural reverence for tigers in Minangkabau, conflicts persist, with tigers often falling victim to snares set by locals. Recently, a female tiger was found dead from a snare in Agam, suffering from a fractured neck.
The agency’s ongoing efforts are crucial for maintaining the Sumatran tiger population, which is typically 2-3 years old at the time of rescue.
