Inp.polri.go.id - Bukittinggi. The Immigration and Corrections Office in West Sumatra has formed an investigation team, which included the Bukittinggi Sub-regional Police, following the death of one inmate and the hospitalization of 22 others due to suspected bootleg alcohol consumption inside Bukittinggi Prison on Wednesday.

“An inmate allegedly stole 200 ml of 70% alcohol—originally intended for a perfume-making rehabilitation program—and misused it to mix an illicit drink,” said Marselina Budiningsih, the Head of the West Sumatra Immigration and Corrections Office  on Thursday (1/5/2025).

The alcohol was combined with packaged drinks, ice, and water before being consumed collectively, resulting in mass poisoning. Two inmates remain in critical condition, according to antaranews.com.

Marselina confirmed the investigation is ongoing and will include inquiries into possible staff negligence. Bukittinggi Police have secured the scene and collected evidence, including containers used for mixing.

Authorities denied rumors of a party prior to the incident and pledged transparency upon conclusion of the probe.
