Inp.polri.go.id - Bandung. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said that community service for convicts sentenced to under five years will help reduce the state’s financial burden by lowering prison occupancy and related costs.
The initiative follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between regional prosecutors’ offices and local governments across the province.
“When someone is imprisoned, the state must provide food, water, and supervision. That costs money, but productivity is low,” Governor Dedi said Thursday (6/11/2025), calling the new policy the realization of his long-held vision for more humane and productive punishment.
The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that offenders with sentences below five years may serve community-based sanctions under the Criminal Code). The scheme tailors community work, such as cleaning public spaces or helping at orphanages, to local development needs without disrupting convicts’ livelihoods.
