Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) have identified one suspect in the recent human trafficking case involving Indonesian migrant workers in Myanmar, Brigadier General Nurul Azizah, the INP’s Director of the Women and Children Protection and Human Trafficking Division, announced on Friday (21/3/2025).
The suspect, identified as HR (27), a private employee from Bangka Belitung, allegedly lured victims with fake job offers as customer service staff in Thailand. However, they were instead sent to Myanmar and forced into online scams without receiving promised wages.
"The victims were deceived into thinking they would work as customer service representatives in Thailand, but instead, they were trafficked to Myanmar and forced into online fraud operations," Chief Nurul said in a press briefing, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The investigation stemmed from an assessment of 699 migrant worker victims trafficked to Myawaddy, Myanmar. Among them, 116 were repeatedly forced into online scam operations. Most victims were recruited via social media, with false promises of salaries ranging from Rp 10–15 million.
Victims were pressured to meet scam quotas, facing verbal and physical abuse and salary deductions if they failed. The INP have identified five suspected traffickers and are pursuing further investigations to uncover the masterminds behind the operation.
