Inp.polri.go.id - Sukabumi  The Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) has reported that 11 residents of Sukabumi, West Java, have fallen victim to human trafficking  and are being held captive in Myanmar.

SBMI Sukabumi Chair Jejen Nurjanah said on Wednesday (11/9/2024) that initially six victims reported the case, later increasing to eight as more families came forward. Three more victims are yet to file formal complaints, bringing the total to 11.

The victims were promised jobs as admin staff or cryptocurrency investment handlers in Thailand but were eventually taken to Myawaddy, Myanmar, where they were forced to work as online scammers, according to antaranews.com.

The victims, who traveled using tourist visas between May and June 2024, were lured by promises of high salaries. Families of the eight identified victims have reported their cases to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , while efforts continue to identify the remaining three.

The victims are reportedly being held captive, subjected to abuse, and forced to work under threat, as Myanmar is currently in conflict.
