inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. China has threatened to take decisive action if the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, persists in visiting Taiwan in August 2022. The visit will seriously damage China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"If the United States still sticks to their plan, China will definitely take firm and strong action in defending its national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian in Beijing, Tuesday (19/7).
"The United States must take full responsibility for all the impacts that this [visit] could causes," he said.
The Financial Times previously reported that Pelosi's visit to Taiwan was part of a series of tours in Asia. Besides Taipei, Pelosi and the delegation will visit Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Separately, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the news of Nancy Pelosi's visit. "[We] did not receive any relevant information [related to the visit]," the Taiwan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Pelosi's office and the US State Department did not gave any respond to the China’s warning.
However, three sources familiar with the trip said the White House had expressed their concern about the trip. Two sources said there were divisions within the US administration over whether Pelosi should visit Taiwan or not.
The news of Pelosi's visit adds to China's anger against the US. Previously, Beijing was furious because Washington sold US$108 million worth of weapons or around Rp1.6 trillion to Taiwan.
China is not messing around with their bluster. Some time ago Beijing crossed the center line of the Taiwan Strait, an act that was seen as a provocation. The incident occurred during US Senator Rick Scott's visit to Taipei.
The US and China are often at odds on various issues. Starting from trade, technology, to the matter of Taiwan.
China has always considered the democratic island as part of its territory. However, Taiwan is adamant in wanting to be independent. The ambition to be independent country was even more evident when Tsai Ing Wen became the president in 2016. The US is said to support this movement.
The stronger the desire, the more often China 'intimidates' Taiwan. They often send warplanes to Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ).
