Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that nine people were killed after flash floods struck the Sitaro Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, early Monday (5/1/2026) following prolonged heavy rainfall.
“The flash floods occurred at around 2:30 a.m. local time after intense rainfall, carrying rocks and mud that inundated roads and residential areas,” said BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The disaster hit East Siau, South East Siau, and West Siau districts leaving five people missing, 17 injured, and 102 residents displaced to the GMIST Bethbara church shelter. At least five houses were swept away, while other material losses are being assessed.
BNPB reported that floodwaters had receded by Monday afternoon, but electricity and telecommunications remained cut off in affected areas. Search and rescue teams continue evacuation and search operations despite logistical challenges, including limited ferry schedules to the island regency.
Authorities urged residents to remain alert to potential secondary hazards as weather conditions remain unstable.
